Interview with Inventor of Fungicide Agents

– Professor, could you please tell us about your research object?

– Our project aims to create new synthetic fungicide preparations (by applying technologies of Green Chemistry), which would treat higher plants, and study their biological activity. Pathogenic fungi parasitize on many higher plants; they adapt continuously and get used to antifungal agents. That’s why it’s necessary to work non-stop to obtain new fungicide agents.

– In what areas is your product applicable?

– In agriculture, in plant cultivation as chemical agents to struggle with parasites.

– Any analogues of what you developed?

– As for analogues, they really exist, but those compounds are obtained in a more complicated way, by going thru a large number of stages. As those analogues usually don’t use “green” technologies, they contain toxic and environmentally unfriendly reagents, which influences the ecology negatively. We developed a one-stage technique to obtain fungicide agents; it does not apply harmful chemical reagents or solvents; so one can regard it as a “green” process whose impact upon the environment is not negative.

– Who developed this project?

– Besides me, that’s Dr. Svyatoslav Nosachyov, who works with our Green Chemistry Research & Educational Center and with our Chair of Organic, Inorganic, & Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

– What’s the practical value of this development for Astrakhan Region?

– Astrakhan Region has always been an agricultural region; melon and seed crops are cultivated here on a large scale. Wild plants are more or less adapted to various parasites, but agricultural crops are much more susceptible to diseases. That’s why our research is of real value for our Region.
