Interview with Prof. Anatoliy Velikorodov, Head of the Chair of Organic, Inorganic, & Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Supervisor of the research project “Obtainment Technique & Fatty-Acid Composition of Oil of Morus Nigra Seeds”.
– What exactly have you patented?
– Morus Nigra is a tree that has been growing in Astrakhan Region for over 300 years. We researched the chemical composition of its seeds and patented the technique to obtain oil from them by applying supercritical fluid extraction. To meet the set goal, we determined the right conditions: pressure, temperature, and process duration to achieve the maximal yield of this product. We also patented the chemical composition of oil of Morus Nigra. It is unique: the ratio of unsaturated higher fatty acids to saturated ones is 65, which is a high rate.
– Why is your product useful?
– As we know, multisaturated fatty acids are antioxidants; a living organism needs them. We expect our development to be applied as a food additive. It makes sense to use it to cook salads and other dishes. I’d remark that one can read the monograph “Chemistry and Technology of Plant Substances” to learn more about the practical value of oils that are obtained from vegetation growing in Astrakhan Region. This monograph was published in Canada in English; it includes a whole chapter written by professors of the Chemical Department of Astrakhan State University.
– What other researches are you conducting in this field?
– We go on researching the chemical structure of plants of Astrakhan Region, for example, burdock. This plant is known as a poisonous one; on the other hand, it produces an antitumoral effect. This fact implies close work together with biologists. We would welcome cooperation with any interested institution that could help us implement our R & D.
