Interview with Prof. Alexey Tyrkov, Dean of the Chemical Department of ASU, Chief of the Green Chemistry Research & Educational Center, Supervisor of the research project “Method to Obtain Oil from Melon Seeds & Oil Composition”.

– What is the specific feature of the oil obtainment method that you apply?

– One of our traditional objects of research is melon, which is grown is Astrakhan Region in large numbers. We applied seeds of this plant to obtain oil. This oil is produced in large volumes by wringing the melon seeds. We developed a technique to obtain oil by using supercritical fluid extraction. Thanks to it, one can extract a larger number of components than by pressing the seeds. What we patented is our method to obtain oil from melon seeds and the chemical composition of this oil.

– In what fields is melon seed oil applied?

– It is applied in Medicine to improve peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract, normalize the liver and the small intestine. There is some data that it influences potency favorably. We have found no negative effects so far.

– How competitive is your product?

– It’s true that there are competitors. Melon seed oil is produced mainly in Central Asia. Our comparative advantages are a higher oil yield and increased biological activity of its components. In case of the traditional method, pressing is required; as for our technique, it requires carbon dioxide, which is not very expensive. The self-cost of our oil is higher than when it’s obtained with the traditional method; on the other hand, we achieved a higher product yield, which can compensate its self-cost.
