Astrakhan volunteers have been to the 16th FINA World Championships 2015 that have been held from July 24 to August 09, 2015 in Kazan (Russia).

The New Step Volunteer Center of Astrakhan State University and the Ministry of Physical Training & Sports of Astrakhan Region have become nonprofit partners of the 16th FINA World Championships 2015. They have assisted the event in attracting, selecting, and training volunteers for the upcoming Championships. The New Step Center has become the only organization in Astrakhan to be involved in such activities.

Only 25 young people (most of whom study at our University) of over 300 candidates have been selected. The 25 selected people have a good knowledge of English, which was one of the main selection criteria.

After interviews with volunteers coming from all over Russia, they were directed to various sports and non-sports venues of the Championships. The Astrakhan team of volunteers was directed to the Aquatics Palace and to the Water Polo Arena together with teams from several other regions of Russia. Besides, our people assisted in the Opening Ceremony and in the Pilgrim Show.

On August 12, our team came back to Astrakhan. During their work at the Championships, our people shared their impressions in social networks, published their photos and videos. Upon their return, they have told about their duties. For example, Vladimir Redko was a volunteer of the information center of the Water Polo Arena: “After each match, we were to show its results on information boards and put the match statistics into the pigeon hole of each participating country. I also accompanied FINA Family guests – those were the top guests from Brazil. We showed them training facilities and the main venues of the Championships; we arranged an excursion of Kazan City for them.

The most memorable event for me was our meeting with Mr. Vitaly Mutko, the Russian Minister of Sport. It was a real honor for me to thank him on behalf of all the volunteers for an opportunity to take part in the Championships, to see everything with our own eyes, and to make our personal contributions to arrangement of such a large-scale event”.

At the meeting with the Federal Minister, Astrakhan State University has been presented a letter of thanks for its large contribution to arrangement of the 16th FINA World Championships 2015 in Kazan and for its participation in training skilled volunteers for this international event.
