Interview with Inventor

Interview with Prof. Alexey Tyrkov, Dean of the Chemical Department of ASU, Supervisor of the research project “Means to Obtain 5-Hetaryl-Methylene-Pyrimidine-2,4,6-Trions”.

– Please tell us about the object of your research.

– Our Green Chemistry Research & Educational Center developed a means to obtain 5-hetaryl-methylene-pyrimidine-2,4,6-trions, which may be applied as potential anticonvulsive and soporific preparations. One of our key fields of activities is to create new materials with various types of biological activity, for example, synthetic pharmaceutical substances.

The object of our patent are the means to obtain 5-hetaryl-methylene-pyrimidine-2,4,6-trions, the proof of its structure, and manifestation of the above-mentioned type of activity by these compounds.

– What’s the specific of obtainment of these preparations?

– As I already said, the technique to obtain these potentially active biological compounds is within the context of the fundamentals of Green Chemistry. Its essence is that a high-yield (about 80 %) substance is formed, so one could minimize the amount of side products. Besides, all the original reagents, which are necessary to obtain the target compounds, are low-toxic or nontoxic. The solvents we apply are environmentally friendly; they exert practically no negative impact on humans and the environment.

– What are the main outcomes of your project?

– The developed means to obtain a series of 12 new compounds helps enlarge the base of biologically active substance with potential anticonvulsive and soporific activity. The therapeutic preparations that are currently applied as sedative agents are rather old; they’ve been at the market for a long time, and most of them contribute to quite a large number of side effects. One of the main outcomes of our project is making means to obtain new pharmaceutical substance with declared biological activity more friendly for humans. All those compounds will be researched in specialized labs afterwards. We got our patent in 2016, so it will take us some time to commercialize our developments.
