Interview with Prof. Alexey Tyrkov, Dean of the Chemical Department of ASU, Supervisor of the research project “Hydrazones of Nitrotetrazole-5-Carbaldehyde with Antimicrobial Activity”.

– What’s the purpose of your project?

– Our projects aims to develop a new means to obtain hydrazones of nitrotetrazole-5-carbaldehyde and research their specific biological activity, particularly biological activity. The range of antimicrobial preparations that are applied nowadays is quite wide, but most of them have a drawback – microorganisms get used to them fast and become resistant to them. Gram-positive, gram-negative, and pathogenic microorganisms develop in those preparations, thus acquiring an immunity. That’s why development of new potential antimicrobial preparations is quite an acute issue.

– Please tell us about the technique you use to obtain the compounds.

– We developed a technique to obtain those hydrazones based on principles of Green Chemistry. It concerns obtainment of high-yield compounds (about 85 – 90 %); 10 % are a minor share of side products, which are isolated quite easily. The original reagent are nontoxic; the obtained compounds are isolated from the reactive environment quite easily, so they require practically no “cleaning” at all. Biological activity of this series of compounds has been researched on 5 to 6 strains of pathogenic microorganisms. It was revealed that biological activity of new compounds is as good as that of present-day antimicrobial preparations (surpassing it in some cases), which are regarded as a standard.

– In what fields are the results of your research applicable?

– The obtained compounds may be applied in pharmaceuticals (to manufacture preparations disinfecting one’s mouth cavity and gastrointestinal tract), in production of household agents (to decontaminate premises), and so on.

– What are the prospects of your project?

– We got our patent in 2016. It’s necessary to keep on researching these compounds to determine their toxicity and side effects that accompany their main therapeutic effect. We have to arrange preclinical and clinical trials and penetrate the pharmaceutical market afterwards.
